How Does Grace Help Us Overcome Weakness? (Knowhy #350)

In the Book of Mormon, the Lord told the prophet Moroni that “if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me.” Understanding this verse can help all of us
better know how to access God’s help and allow Christ’s grace to support us through
our difficulties in life. First, notice that the Lord used the word
“weakness” and not “weaknesses.” In fact, Book of Mormon authors never used
the word “weaknesses.” Instead, they used ‘weakness’ to talk
about the ‘condition’ of being weak, or the universal weakness associated with mortality,
and not specific weaknesses that God gives us. Second, it is also significant that the text
does not only read that Christ’s grace is sufficient for all. Instead, Christ’s grace is only fully effective in the lives of all those “that humble themselves before” Him. The Book of Mormon teaches that grace is conditional
upon the individual having the humility to accept it. In our humility, we acknowledge that it is
our own weak and fallen condition that opens the door to the grace of Jesus in our lives. If we will humble ourselves and come to Christ, he will help us to overcome this weakness through His grace and power. And now you know why
